Results of Smoke Alarm Blitz Surprising!

When the data from the recent neighbourhood blitz was analyzed, the results showed that one third of all homes canvassed had inadequate early warning and almost one quarter of all of them had no early warning at all because of dead batteries or not having a smoke alarm.
 
On June 5th the London Fire Services conducted a smoke alarm blitz in partnership with the Renovators’ Council of the London Home Builders’ Association.  The media and City Council were invited to the event and Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best personally lead the charge as crews worked their way down the streets.  
 
“Our data gathered in this event showed us that there is still a need for ongoing education about the need for working smoke alarms”, said Deputy Chief Dan Oldridge.  “We expected to find a few that were not working, but it surprised us there were still so many homes without any smoke alarms at all.”  
 
During the blitz, residents that did not have a working smoke alarm were provided with one, courtesy of the Renovators. Installation was also provided by the renovators if the homeowner required the service.
 
While feedback from the fire crews and renovators that participated indicates that most people are getting the message, it appears there will always be a need for more education and community awareness on this issue. The next blitz is planned for late September.
